Environmental protection, as well as development of local social and cultural projects.
Plantation Bay really cares about the local people and environment of Mactan Island. They make continual efforts in a variety of areas to put real actions into their commitment.
In recognising the fundamental of education, they provide a free school bus service in the community, making it possible for hundreds of local children (who could not afford public transportation) to obtain a basic education. Further education is provided to various local residents through the provision of vocational training. Plantation Bay has also provided most of the funding to build and operate a day-care centre for indigenous families in South Cebu City. Through these projects, they are really able to connect and help the local people.
In keeping with their commitment to people, all of their staff are treated as one big family, and are paid good salaries and benefits. Because of this, you can really see the passion their staff have, and will go out of their way at the drop of a hat.
Almost as important as their people, Plantation Bay is also a strong advocate of environmental protection. All aspects of the resort's development strictly adhered to principles of not disturbing the surrounding ecosystems. In 2004, Plantation Bay paid for the reforestation of about 120 hectares in Cebu's highlands, while also breeding some of its own fish (for use in their restaurant) in fishponds within the hotel thereby reducing overfishing in Philippines' waters.
In partnership with universities and public agencies Plantation Bay cooperates in all efforts to protect marine life and promote the stability of coral reefs. Since the resort opened in 1996, there has been a dramatic re-growth of the coral reefs in this part of Mactan Island.
The resort also ensures they are focused on their waste management, using septic tanks for residential sewage which is subsequently spread out over a large area to avoid a concentration of effluent, and the laundry is equipped with a biomechanical waste treatment plant. No waste is dumped into the sea, with some garbage is recycled as fish-feed. Bottles and cans are separated and sold to recyclers.
